Progressive Developments of the Organization of University Library

1961  The university library was established under the Office of Academic Affairs as the university's founding to provide services based on functional divisions.

1975  Promotion from a division from the Office of Academic Affairs, the library was designated to be a first-level unit, led by a director and a deputy director. The Library had four divisions: Acquisition, Exchange, Cataloging, and Circulation. The Library Director also served as the Dean of Academic Affairs.

1979  The Exchange Division and Acquisition Division were consolidated and the Collection Management Division was created.

1983  An Audio-Visual Resource Room was part of the Circulation Division.

1985  A full-time director was appointed to be in charge of all the library affairs.

1997  The Audio-Visual Teaching Center, formerly being a part of the Office of Academic Affairs, was put into the organization of the Library and renamed the Audio-Visual Division, expanding as the fifth division of the Library.

2000  The Acquisition Division and Cataloging Division was consolidated as the Acquisition and Cataloging Division.

2001  The organization of the Library was restructured into four divisions including Technical Support & Services, Circulation Management and Services, Reference and Information Services, and Electronic Resource Management & Services.

2014  In February, the Cloud Academy was established in order to adapt to new trends of digital learning. The President of FCU served as the Dean, and the Library Director acing as its executive director. Three divisions were restructured as Digital Learning, Intellectual Property Strategy, and Event Promotion, which seamlessly promoted academy-related affairs and digital learning courses.

2014  In August, the organization was re-assigned into three divisions, namely Collection Development, User Services, and Digital Learning.

2022  The organization was merged into two focused divisions: Collection Development and User Services.

2023  The organization was shaped up in three divisions: Collection Development, User Services, and the Cultural Center of Chinese Calligraphy.

Library Facilities and Spaces

1963  The FCU campus relocated to Xitun District, and the library moved to the second floor of the Teaching Building to provide services.

1964  The library moved to the fourth floor of the Administration Building, with librarians’ office and book storage, and a periodicals and newspapers area set up on part of the first floor.

1971  A new independent library building was constructed on the current site (the front building), with the floor area of over 2,400 pings (or 7,940 m2), which it was the largest university library in central Taiwan. The opening ceremony was held in November.

1988  To accommodate university development, the Library expanded with an annex (the rear building), with an addition of 1,500 pings (or 4,950 m2) of floor space. The new building was inaugurated in June.

1990  The "College of Management Library " was established in the Qiu Feng Chia Memorial Hall.

1997  The "Electronics Engineering Library " was set up in the Information and Electrical Engineering Building, and an " Architecture & Urban Planning Library" was set up in Zhongqin Building. 

1999  The " College of Business Library" was established in the College of Business, while the "College of Management Library" was decommissioned.

2000  The "Civil & Hydraulic Engineering Library" was established in the Civil and Hydraulic Engineering Building.

2001  The entire library underwent renovations project was to expand its space over a 15-month period, during which library services still remained. The library was re-opened on December 24.

2004  The " College of Business Library" and the "Electronics Engineering Library" were decommissioned. 

2005  A self-study room was introduced in the basement of the Science and Aeronautics Building.

2011  The "Kreative Commons (Knowledge Creative Commons, KC)" was added to the north side of the second floor of the front building, providing a one-stop shopping learning commons.

2012  The "Civil and Hydraulic Engineering Library" was decommissioned.

2014  The KC was decommissioned as the preparation of the "International College of Technology and Management."

2016  The space of library's collection was re-allocated, and the "Fuxing Closed Stacks" was established in the second basement of the Fuxing campus dormitory, offering designated retrieval services. Space in the south side of the rear building's basement was allocated for use by the "International College of Technology and Management."

2017  The "Programming Practice Area" was introduced to the south side of the second floor of the front building for professional teaching and training.

2018  The fourth floor and the third floor of the rear building were re-purposed for the President's Office, the Secretary's Office, the Office of Research and Development, the Human Resources Office, and the Finance Office, of which new spaces were in use in September.

2019  The "Renyan Closed Stacks" was established in the second basement of the Renyan Building, offering designated retrieval services. The north side of the basement of the rear building was allocated to the "College of Innovation and Energy," which officially opened for operation on March 12th.

2020  The " Architecture & Urban Planning Library" was decommissioned.

2023  The library continues to undergo space renovations, creating diverse learning spaces for various functions such as collaborative study, quiet reading, and learning support. The renovated spaces were reopened on December 25th.
